12VHPWR vs 12V-2x6

Both are 16-pin connectors rated to 600W. The original 12VHPWR (RTX 40, 3090 Ti) had melting reports tied to partial seating. The revised 12V-2x6 (RTX 50) shortens the four sense pins and lengthens the conductor terminals so a not-fully-seated plug simply won't power on.

Why full seating matters

A 600W connector carries up to ~50A across six 12V pins. If the plug is even slightly loose, current crowds onto fewer pins, resistance rises, and the plastic can melt. Push until it clicks and keep the cable straight for the first 35mm.

Native cable vs adapter

If your PSU is ATX 3.0/3.1 it ships with a single native 16-pin cable - always prefer it over the multi-8-pin adapter bundled with the GPU. On an older ATX 2.x PSU you must use that adapter; upgrading to an ATX 3.1 unit removes the extra failure point.

Transient spikes & ATX 3.x

Modern GPUs draw brief spikes far above their rated TGP - an RTX 4090 can hit ~600W for microseconds. ATX 3.0/3.1 PSUs are certified to handle up to 200% excursions, which is why they're recommended for high-end cards even when the average draw looks modest.

If the checker flagged an adapter or a borderline PSU, these are the safe upgrades. A native 12V-2x6 cable or an ATX 3.1 PSU removes the most common failure point on high-end cards.
